TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - The city of Tucson is launching a pilot program to provide a safe sleeping site for the homeless.

The city made the announcement during a news conference at City Hall on Friday, Aug. 22.

The city said it will partner with community volunteers and nonprofits for the program, which will be called Serving Together and Rebuilding (STAR) Village.

“The streets are very, very unsafe, especially for our unsheltered residents,” said Tucson Mayor Regina Romero. “So we want to be able to give them that peace of mind where they can sleep, but also connect to food, connect to clothing, connect to resources so that they can find a long-term answer.”

The location is expected to be 244 East Grant Road, and the city said it will talk with residents and businesses in the area.
