ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Historic All Star Bowling Lanes in Orangeburg is getting a new marquee as part of ongoing restoration efforts at the site.

On Monday, Congressman James Clyburn and Orangeburg Mayor Michael Butler will officially light the sign, marking a new chapter for a location deeply tied to Orangeburg’s civil rights history.

All Star Bowling Lanes was the city’s only bowling alley in 1968, during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. The business failed to desegregate, sparking protests. The site later became connected to the Orangeburg Massacre, when three students were killed and at least 29 others were wounded by police gunfire. The building has been closed since the late 2000s.

Ellen Zisholtz, who now owns the property, is leading restoration efforts.
