CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Students who walk the halls of Charles Drew High School can expect many of their teachers to look just like them.
“For many of…especially Black boys, we make education look aspirational,” said Alfred ‘Shivy’ Brooks, economics teacher and Atlanta Public Schools board member.
Brooks created a now viral video on social media, greeting and highlighting other black male educators. The phenomenon is something that’s not at all common nationwide.
Previous reporting on Atlanta News First shows there is critical shortage of Black male teachers across America, with Black men accounting for just over 1% of public school teachers.
At Drew High School, the principal said that number is up to 28%.
