MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Army veteran Denis Alfin has spent more than a decade saving lives in the skies, and now he’s bringing that experience to the classroom.

Alfin, who flew medical evacuation helicopters in Afghanistan, officially began his journey into medicine on Friday at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health’s White Coat Ceremony—a tradition marking the start of medical school for new students.

“I joined the Army when I graduated college in 2009, and I served until 2023,” Alfin said. “Towards the end of my career, I was able to work at a primary care clinic in the Army. And so, I got some hands-on experience with patients. And I really kind of start to develop a real interest in it.”
