ELKADER, Iowa (KCRG) - Pattison Sand Company in Clayton County is asking the state for permission to use 3.7 billion gallons of water a year.

That has neighbors worried about their own water supply.

The main concern from area residents is higher water usage could compromise private and public wells in the area. Others worry Pattison’s plans could drain water from the Jordan Aquifer and have impacts across the state.

“Quarries do have an impact on the water table and de watering for a quarry does have that impact,” said DNR geologist Chad Fields.

Fields and state officials met with the public to put to rest some of the public’s fears.

“Transparency is what’s needed in order to sort through things like this,” said Steve Veysey.
