An always-on-duty firefighter is ready to take on the City That Never Sleeps.

As a wildland firefighter based in Peace River, Alberta, Bailey Pinkney of Simcoe spends most of her time on the job, but when she’s not working, she’s running.

“I grew up playing hockey, but stopped during COVID (pandemic). I just wanted to pick up something else to keep me busy,” said Pinkney.

“I just really enjoy running. I find it fun. It’s just something I’ve enjoyed doing the last few years.”

With a career that demands 10 to 14-hour days plus multiple half-marathons under her belt, Pinkney applied for the 2025 New York City Marathon lottery on a whim. To her surprise, the bid was successful.
