Newly proposed enforcement measures for vacant properties and rental properties received a lukewarm reception from Eastpointe City Councilman Cardi DeMonaco Jr. at Tuesday’s regular council meeting.

Changes to the fee schedule for permits, inspections, and annual licensing fees as well as a new schedule for inspection of vacant and rental properties were discussed at length during a first read of the proposals at the Aug. 19 meeting.

Owners of vacant property would be required to renew their registration every six months for as long as their structure remains vacant at which time the property would be inspected by the city. The city’s building department and administration is also recommending a progressive fee structure where fees would increase the longer a property remains vacant.
