I've read the Saturday, Aug. 16, edition of the Herald and the opinion piece titled "More cameras in downtown GF might help dissuade crime," written by the Herald itself.
The premise that we must sacrifice privacy for the sake of safety is a classic example of the false dilemma fallacy. The public, or the Herald, attempting to speak on behalf of what they think the public wants at least, is not choosing between security and privacy but between liberty and control.
The Herald itself admitted that “Fargo’s cameras didn’t stop the violent and deadly incidents from happening …”, which is in fact an argument against installing surveillance cameras. The public would be sacrificing their privacy, and their electricity bill, for practically nothing in return.
