The widow of a man who died after surgeons left a needle in his chest during heart surgery has reached a compensation settlement with Hull University Teaching Hospital NHS Trust. Leslie Runkee, a father-of-four, was undergoing the procedure at Castle Hill Hospital in October 2023 when the surgical team lost a needle inside his chest.
Upon realising their error, they requested a radiographer to take X-rays to locate the missing instrument. However, as there was no radiographer on site after 8pm, a specialist had to be called from a nearby hospital.
The Trust's policy is to provide cover within 30 minutes, but, due to heavy traffic that night, the journey took over an hour. As a result of this delay, Mr Runkee's condition deteriorated and the decis
