Philadelphia star pitcher Zack Wheeler will be out six to eight months following surgery to remove a blood clot in his upper right arm, the Phillies announced Saturday.
Wheeler, a right hander, had a follow-up evaluation and received second opinions this week after his successful on Monday, Aug. 18.
Wheeler, 35, was diagnosed with venous thoracic outlet syndrome and the recommendation is to undergo thoracic outlet decompression surgery in the coming weeks, the team said in a release.
The timeline of recovery from the surgery is generally six to eight months, the team said.
Wheeler, a three-time All-Star, was 10-5 this season with 195 strikeouts in 149.2 innings. His ERA was 2.71.
Wheeler was selected to the All-Star Game in 2021, 2024 and this season. Originally Published: August 23
