TUPPER LAKE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has reopened the Goodman Mountain Trail in Tupper Lake for public use. The reopening comes after a months-long closure due to the presence of a sick moose.
The Goodman Mountain Trail first closed in June, when officials observed a bull moose behaving unusually over an extended period of time. Earlier in August, DEC decided to humanely euthanize the animal after its condition significantly deteriorated.
After the euthanasia, the trail remained closed while officials reportedly studied the area and collected evidence of the animal's foraging behavior and habitat range. The trail was reopened to the public on Friday.
