A mandatory evacuation has been ordered following an explosion at a lubricant manufacturing plant in Louisiana. The incident occurred at Smitty's Supply in Roseland, Tangipahoa Parish, on Friday afternoon. Local officials reported the explosion happened shortly before 1 p.m., sending a large plume of smoke into the air.

Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller confirmed that the evacuation zone initially covered the immediate area but was later expanded to a one-mile radius around the plant. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office urged residents to "Relocate IMMEDIATELY and stay away from this area until further notice" via social media.

An elementary school within the evacuation zone began relocating students to a safer location in Amite City. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, which Miller described as a "godsend" during a press briefing. The fire at the facility remains active, and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is monitoring the situation.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, and officials have not determined if there is a significant chemical risk. Miller stated, "We are doing our best to protect people, structures, and the environment" as firefighters worked to control the blaze.

Smitty's Supply, which employs about 400 people, manufactures and distributes various lubricants, including motor oils. The explosion has also led to the closure of Highway 51 at Highway 10 in Roseland, a town with a population of approximately 1,100, located about 50 miles northeast of Baton Rouge.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry emphasized the importance of following local officials' guidance, stating, "We are monitoring this situation closely. Please follow the guidance of your local officials. We are praying for everyone’s safety."

As the situation develops, authorities continue to assess the scene and provide updates to the public.
