LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Elmer Lucille Allen was born in Louisville in 1931.
Allen is regarded for her contributions to science and culture around the city.
In 1966, she became the first African American chemist at Brown-Forman, where she worked until her retirement in 1997.
In her retirement, Allen also devoted her time to the arts. She helped establish the Kentucky Coalition of African American Arts and was a founding member of the Louisville Arts Council.
Allen sign can be seen at the corner of Winnrose Way and Fairland Place. The sign reads “Elmer Lucille Allen Way.”
