CANTON, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - For the 15th year, an honoring at the Hiawatha Asylum site took place on Saturday in Canton.

The site is on the grounds of the Hiawatha Golf Club, marked by a plaque, honoring the 120 Native Americans who died in the asylum.

The keepers of the Canton Native Asylum host the event every year as a way to remind people of the history of the building and as a memorial for those who were lost.

“We come here to keep that story alive, so it doesn’t happen again. People who don’t remember their past are destined to repeat it. So here, we want to make sure this remains alive,” said attendee John Beheler.

The honoring was followed by a potluck at the Canton United Methodist Church.
