The late-summer heat wave took a turn overnight Friday into Saturday, when lightning and thunderstorms moved through Southern California, producing more than 1,300 strikes as of mid-afternoon and sparking multiple fires in the Angeles National Forest and elsewhere.

As of around 3 p.m., the National Weather Service recorded widespread lightning activity from Los Angeles to San Bernardino counties.

Riverside County had 661 lightning strikes, with 266 of them measured as cloud-to-ground. Southwest San Bernardino County recorded 292 strikes, with 106 reaching the ground. Orange County had 174 strikes, with just four hitting the ground.

Los Angeles County saw 231 strikes, though how many were cloud-to-ground was not immediately available .
