A 15-year-old Portland boy is accused of attempted murder and arson after he allegedly lit his family’s Northwest Heights house on fire and caused other damage to the home with a hammer during a mental health crisis, according to a news release from the Portland Police Bureau.

Officers responded to a home in the 1700 block of Northwest Potters Court around 3 p.m. Friday after receiving a report that a boy in mental health crisis was causing significant damage to his family’s home with a hammer, police said.

Other family members had evacuated the house and were unhurt. Officers brought in an Enhanced Crisis Intervention Team and a team from Project Respond, who tried to convince the boy to surrender for more than an hour, but were unsuccessful.

The family and officers agreed to disengage
