With a loud crowd and a local football legend on hand, the Sault Cougars made their home debut in the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) on Saturday at Rocky DiPietro Field.

The afternoon carried extra meaning thanks to the namesake himself. DiPietro, the Canadian Football Hall of Famer and Sault native, took in the game from the Cougars’ sideline, reflecting on the city’s deep football roots.

“It brings back a lot of memories,” he said. “The Sault has a great football community … when I was here, these stands were full every weekend, Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Saturday night, three games every weekend. It was beautiful.”
