BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
The National Association of Black Journalists is approaching its 50th birthday.
It's origins, impact over time and growth were displayed on the big screen at the Sidewalk Film Festival.
"It's always good to get a historical perspective," said Barnett Wright, a member of the Birmingham chapter of NABJ.
44 journalists came together on December 12, 1975, to form NABJ.
The organization's founding came at a time where Black journalists were few in number and lacked opportunities.
“I was 23 and working in a newsroom where I was the only black woman. There was nobody who looked like me that I could have a conversation with," said Sandra Dawson Long Weaver, one of the NABJ founders.
