Long before he became a Fox Sports broadcaster, Gus Johnson grew up on Detroit’s west side playing as many sports as possible.
It was at Howard University in 1987 where Johnson discovered his passion for sports broadcasting. Since then, he has been doing play-by-play, driven by his enduring love for sports. “It doesn’t promise the pay to make you a billionaire, but it does promise to give you better-than-billionaire experiences,” Johnson said.
The Detroit News spoke with Johnson, 58, about where his love for sports began, his transition from athlete to play-by-play announcer, his favorite call, and his predictions for the upcoming Big Ten football season.
