To truly see and value someone else’s humanity, first we have to see and value our own humanity. An eye for an eye solves nothing. We need the village to actually be the full village again, regardless of the zip codes we live in. We need to come together. We need the communal family of play aunties and play uncles, mother-like figures and father-like figures and parents and guardians — who are genuinely caring, courageous and accountable role models — to intervene, show up, acknowledge and build up our children, youth, young adults and parents; those who need support, guidance and a range of healthy social and emotional connections.
