Labor Day is coming up, and this year it falls on Monday, Sept. 1 .

The federal holiday is observed each year on the first Monday of September and serves as a celebration of the achievements of America's labor movement.

As activists advocated for better treatment for workers at the height of the Industrial Revolution, they came up with the idea to establish a holiday dedicated to the members of trade and labor unions.

And now, travelers tend to take advantage of the late-summer holiday, as many offices and stores close annually to commemorate it.
