In his 1972 book, Sinking into the Devil's Excrement, Venezuelan ideologue and founder of OPEC Juan Pablo Pérez Alfonzo stated: "...an extreme reduction in oil production could trigger the awareness that is essential for us to proceed with what is in the best interest of our nation, rather than interests foreign to Venezuela."
The prologue to the text was written by the great economist and UCV professor, Francisco Mieres, who openly defiantly highlights "Pérez Alfonzo's courageous attitude of digging deep, which in turn makes him the most brilliant opposition leader to his own government... because he knows that what is at stake is too serious to be involved in dissimulation and make-believe."
