Randy Vásquez is staying ready with Triple-A El Paso.
The 26-year-old right-hander threw five shutout innings on Saturday before the Chihuahuas’ bullpen crumbled late in a 5-4 loss in 11 innings in Sacramento.
Vasquez struck out two, walked two and scattered two hits in lowering his Pacific Coast League ERA to 5.63.
Vásquez threw 40 of his 71 pitches for strikes in the start, his first action of any kind since working in bulk relief last week at Dodger Stadium.
Vásquez was called up for that appearance as Michael King hit the injured list and he returned to El Paso after that appearance as the team called up JP Sears for Wednesday’s start against the Giants.
Right-hander Manuel Castro (2-1, 3.50 ERA) walked four and allowed two runs over 1⅔ innings to end the game.
