STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — By the beginning of 2026, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will no longer sell MetroCards as the transit system switches to OMNY.

The MTA will retire the pre-paid seven- and 30-day unlimited passes, along with the Express Bus Plus option.

Local buses will also no longer accept coins as a form of fare payment at some point in the future. Eventually, MetroCards will be completely phased out, marking a full transition to the tap-and-go system.

With only three Staten Island OMNY card dispenser locations , it’s easier for most Staten Islanders to purchase the tap-and-go OMNY cards from a local store.

The OMNY website offers a tool called the “OMNY card Retail Locator” that allows residents to input their address or ZIP code to find nearby OMNY retailers.
