NEW ORLEANS — Firefighters battled a three-alarm fire at a salvage yard in New Orleans East after heavy rain, poor street conditions, and inoperable hydrants complicated efforts to contain the blaze, officials said.

The New Orleans Fire Department said it was dispatched to the 9300 block of Old Gentilly Road at 7:50 p.m. Saturday. The first unit arrived at 9301 Old Gentilly Road at 8:10 p.m., delayed by rain, dilapidated streets, and limited lighting in the isolated area.

Firefighters reported finding restricted access and an inadequate water supply at the site, which contributed to the escalation of the fire. Crews were forced to climb over scrap vehicles blocking the entrance, and at least two nearby hydrants were found to be inoperable, the department said.
