A Winnipeg man is in custody after allegedly attempting to stab a security guard during a grocery store robbery on Stafford Street Saturday evening.

Police say the incident happened around 5:15 p.m. on Aug. 23, when a man entered a grocery store in the 600 block of Stafford Street, selected meat products, and tried to leave without paying. When a security guard intervened, the suspect allegedly produced a knife and attempted to stab him. The guard was punched and sustained minor facial injuries. The suspect fled the store empty-handed.

Officers from the West District General Patrol located the man less than an hour later in the 100 block of Osborne Street. He was arrested without incident, and police seized a knife from him.
