Shadow Hills High School started the 2025-26 school year with 320 fewer students than Indio High, according to the Desert Sands Unified School District. That may have played a role in the Knights' roster having fewer players than usual this season.

Given that the Knights also lost dynamic starting quarterback Pedro Trujillo to graduation, seemingly leaving the quarterback spot an area of uncertainty this season, there was at least some reason to believe that Indio could give Shadow Hills a good game in this year's Mayor's Cup rivalry game.
