LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - On Sunday, Loaves and Fishes homeless shelter hosted an open house to showcase their newest expansion.

Loaves and Fishes established itself in 1981, and now, 43 years later it is expanding from 12 to 24 beds. Now, 12 men and 12 women will be housed in separate wings of the same building.

“There is a growing need in the community for more beds for those experiencing homelessness,” Kendra Basiga, Loaves and Fishes board president said. “As a board, we decided to shift our transitional housing for women and children into emergency shelter needs for women.”

Most of the funding made available to the business was made through donations. Whether it was through monetary donations, or by adopting a room, or volunteering their time.
