LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville trailblazer was honored in the Chickasaw neighborhood.

The corner of Winnrose Way and Fairland Place has been dedicated as Elmer Lucille Allen Way.

Allen, 94, was the first Black chemist at Brown-Forman, breaking that barrier in 1966.

She analyzed raw products that grow into making whiskey, corn rye and malt.

“For her to receive an honor is well overdue. She’s been on the battlefield a long, long time,” Louisville civil rights icon Mattie Jones said. “God has been good to us.”

Allen’s impact reaches into the arts as she helped establish the Kentucky Coalition of African American Arts. She is also a founding member of the Louisville Arts Council.
