The University of South Carolina issued a campuswide alert Sunday evening warning of a possible active shooter near the Thomas Cooper Library, but officials later said there was no evidence of a threat.

What we know:

The initial alert, sent around 6:45 p.m., told students to evacuate the area near the library, shelter in place and barricade themselves if necessary. The message also provided a description of a possible suspect: a white male, about 6 feet tall, wearing black pants.

"Defend yourself if you encounter the suspect. Obey public safety officials’ commands," the alert stated.
