Waterspouts swept across the Great Lakes Sunday as a cold front moved into the region from Canada, and the region may see more in the coming days, weather experts say.
The Great Lakes had at 25 confirmed fair-weather waterspouts/funnels — possibly more — on Sunday, Aug. 24, including on Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Lake Erie, according to reports by the International Centre for Waterspout Research.
Forecasters say waterspout activity on the Great Lakes could continue into Tuesday, the ICWR and local National Weather Service offices said.
Waterspouts tend to form when the air is cool and moist, and the water is near its warmest. The phenomena tend to form on the Great Lakes from August to October, the National Weather Service said.
