A monitor lizard was on the loose in Old Town as of Sunday evening, according to local police.
The reptile was seen in the area of Hillside Avenue, according to the Old Town Police Department.
“Its current whereabouts are unknown,” the department said in a Facebook post at 7:15 p.m. “What we know about this lizard is that [it’s] very intelligent, [preys] on small animals, it has sharp teeth and strong jaws capable of causing injury.”
Police advised people who see the lizard to not approach it and to report the sighting to police.
“If you own this lizard, we’d like you to call us,” the department said.
Monitors are a family of lizards native to the southern hemisphere that can grow to a few feet in length.
