BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Police in Old Town are looking for a big lizard on the loose.

They say it was last seen near a home on Hillside Avenue.

“The owner said that it was his understanding that it was at his house. He didn’t realize that it had escaped until he saw our Facebook post, but he’s been in constant communication with us, and we’re working with him to try to locate this,” explained Sgt. Ryan Bailey with Old Town Police.

Authorities say it’s unlikely a tegu, especially a pet, would prey upon dogs and cats. However, they say the lizard may attack if provoked, so keeping dogs on leashes and cats inside may be smart for the time being.

“If your dog is off-leash and is starting to go after it and barking, it could be an issue. If it’s on leash, just keep control of your dog,” advi
