ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Joe Montalbano, a World War II veteran, celebrated his 100th birthday today, marking a century of life and service.

Known as Uncle Joe, Montalbano received a Purple Heart for his service during World War II, where he served in both France and Germany. Today, he remains active in his community through his church and by supporting fellow veterans.

"Grandpa was around for most of my life, childhood and well into adulthood. He's been a big part of it," said Montalbano's grandson, Jimmy Montalbano. "I have two little boys here that I brought with and he knows them and gets to see them. So it's been great."

Montalbano's family and community members gathered to celebrate this milestone, reflecting on his contributions and the legacy he continues to build.
