The nation’s $20 billion childcare industry has been thrust into the spotlight after explosive allegations of neglect, abuse and profit-driven malpractice aired on 60 Minutes on Sunday night.

Reporter Dimity Clancey described an industry “broken” by greed, where “the cost of care seems to dominate the thinking at many of the businesses that operate childcare facilities.”

Former apprentice childcare worker Felicity, now 19, told the program she began her career with passion but was quickly disillusioned.

“I wasn’t being trained to be an educator. I was trained to be a babysitter to just get through the day,” she said.
