Plymouth Township ― When it was announced back in January that The Cardinal, a new championship course on the vast, obsessively manicured grounds of Saint John's Resort, was selected to host LIV Golf's season-ending team championship, resort staff heard the comments. A lot of comments, many of them negative.

There's great controversy that has followed LIV Golf since it debuted in 2022, and that's never fully going away, given its funding comes from a nation with a horrific human-rights record, in Saudi Arabia, and given how the upstart tour helped to fracture the game of golf at the highest levels, perhaps irrevocably.

But Saint John's spent tens of millions building The Cardinal with the vision of one day hosting an elite-level golf tournament at the corner of Sheldon and Five Mile,
