As measles cases have reached 100 in New Mexico, the Department of Health reports more than a 70% increase in vaccinations.

According to Chief Medical Officer Miranda Durham, it starts as a common virus with symptoms of a runny nose, fever and coughing.

"The kind of the distinction of measles is, after a couple of days of those symptoms, the rash breaks out, and the rash tends to start on the head and work its way down the body," Durham said.

She told KOAT the last measles outbreak was in the 1990s.

"We've seen just sporadic cases like one or two he,re but plenty of years go by when we don't see them at all. So, this really was something quite different than what we've dealt with before," Durham said.
