WATERBURY, Conn. (WFSB) - Waterbury students are back in class, and the district is starting the year with two major goals.

The first focuses on hands-on learning.

Instead of copying from the board, students will complete tasks that help them think more deeply.

Teachers will guide students through activities that build real understanding.

The second goal is personal as each teacher is being asked to focus on two students.

That could mean helping them improve attendance or pass state tests.

Superintendent Dr. Darren Schwartz says this effort, repeated every year, can lead to big changes across the district.

This year, students will also see new technology in their schools.
