NORMAN — As much as the red carpet could be rolled out in Las Cruces, the New Mexico State football program pulled out all the stops when John Mateer came for his official visit.

When Jerry Kill, Tim Beck and their staff took the quarterback recruit from Little Elm, Texas, to Aggie Memorial Stadium for a photo shoot under the lights, they didn’t have much to offer in swag. Just uniforms and footballs. But Mateer made himself right at home.

After finishing the shoot, Mateer enlisted an Aggie aide to run a post route but failed four or five times to connect on a deep shot with his ragtag receiver. The coaching staff was ready to keep the night moving, but Mateer insisted. He had to end on a completion.
