With Anthony Volpe getting benched for Sunday night’s game with the Red Sox, David Cone weighed in on the decision by manager Aaron Boone.
Volpe was benched to start the game for Jose Caballero, who went 0-for-3 with an RBI, although Volpe did enter the Yankees 7-2 victory late in the game at shortstop.
“This is not the time to be worried about anybody’s feelings about anything,” Cone said on the ESPN broadcast. “This is the time where you’ve got to win every game you can, and that’s the decision you make every night, before you put your head on the pillow, is what’s my lineup going to look like tomorrow?”
As for Monday’s game with the Washington Nationals, Volpe won’t start that game either but will return to the lineup on Tuesday, per The Athletic.
