PENN YAN, N.Y. (WROC) — A new report by the State Comptroller looked into healthcare professional shortages in some rural counties across the state and found shortfalls.
The report by the State Comptroller examined 16 rural counties statewide, the closest to us being Wyoming and Yates counties, which are both designated as Federal Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA). These shortfalls include primary care, pediatric, and OBGYN doctors, dentists, and mental health practitioners, with several of those counties having no pediatricians or OBs at all.
"I think we have to acknowledge those challenges and at the same time really try to promote different rural healthcare systems, promote the programs that are available that are developed to attract physicians, and providers to rural areas,"
