CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) -- A retired Air Force colonel who commanded the final mission out of Afghanistan during the 2021 withdrawal of US troops has set his sights on Congress.

Ret. Lt. Col. Alex Pelbath launched his campaign for South Carolina's First Congressional District on Monday morning, casting himself as a political outsider who will fight for President Donald Trump's agenda.

"I never planned to run for Congress, but I witnessed the devastation caused by career politicians' weak leadership," Pelbath says in an 80-second video as images of former President Joe Biden flashed on the screen, including one of his stumbling on the steps of Air Force One.
