OCRACOKE, N.C. (WITN) - The last stretch of Highway 12 that was closed because of Hurricane Erin will reopen this afternoon.
The Department of Transportation says the highway, between the pony pens and the northern ferry terminal on Ocracoke Island, will once again allow vehicles starting at 5:00 p.m.
The highway closed on Wednesday before Erin brushed by our coast. D.O.T. crews then worked to first rebuild sand dunes, and then remove the sand and water from the highway.
Ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke will have an amended schedule tonight, followed by its regular summer schedule tomorrow.
From Hatteras: 5, 6, 7:30, 8, 9, 11 and midnight.
From Ocracoke: 6, 6:30, 7:30, 9, 9:30, 10:30 and midnight.
