An accidental scratch from her pet cat led one woman to an emergency room with a serious infection.

People reports that the woman, Kara Marie, was getting off of her couch at the same time her cat, Sponge, jumped up onto it, soon after he’d used the litter box.

Marie told People that her cat accidentally dug a claw beneath her fingernail in the process. While she immediately washed her hands, Marie noticed that the injury didn’t bleed, which may have led to contaminants becoming trapped.

Marie said she felt fine all weekend, but the following Monday she began experiencing pain in her finger. A round of antibiotic from her doctor didn’t prevent things from getting worse, nor did attempts to soak and massage the wound to help force out the infection.
