TUSCUMBIA, Ala. — A Deshler High School freshman who suffered severe injuries on Tuesday is home from the hospital and is expected to fully recover, but his family is frustrated by the way the situation has been handled and still lacks answers to many questions.
Kristen and Drew Van Devender are August Borden's mother and step-father. On Sunday, they described a harrowing afternoon in which an ordinary drive to pick the football player up from an after-school weightlifting session became a frantic rush to a hospital in Birmingham.
"I got a text: 'Are you on the way to get August?'" Kristen Van Devender said. "'There's something that's happened. You need to get here.'"
She arrived to find "an ambulance, police, fire trucks surrounding the area."
