Dear Pay Dirt,

My family lives in an extremely expensive metro area. About a year ago, we decided to move a few states over to a slightly less expensive metro area to be closer to family. We finally have an offer on our apartment, and we’re making plans for the move. But now I’m panicking.

I’m so stressed about buying a house in our new location: The market is still absolutely bonkers. Modest homes (like 1500 square feet or less) sell for $100,000 over asking price, and properties go into contract within days of getting listed.
