PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - On Monday, the City of Portland announced a new and controversial homeless shelter in the Pearl District will open next Tuesday, Sep. 2.
Known as the NW Northrup Shelter, the new emergency overnight shelter will have 40 beds for people to start. It’s planned to increase to 100 beds after the first month, and may expand to 200 beds eventually, the city said in a statement.
The city says, with the opening of this shelter, the the city will expand to 630 beds total.
In the past, neighbors in the Pearl have expressed worry about the shelter . At a community meeting, attended by about 350 people, in June, some people said a shelter was not the answer to the homeless issue.
“We’ve been living this crisis in a very unique and visceral way for the last couple of years,
