TUOLUMNE COUNTY, Calif. —

An 85-year-old woman and her dog were found safe in Tuolumne County Sunday night, after the woman was reported missing and said to be at risk because of dementia.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office had said the woman was last seen with her small dog Saturday morning around 6:30 a.m. on foot in Sonora.

The California Highway Patrol activated a Silver Alert on behalf of the sheriff’s office on Sunday.

The sheriff’s office said in an update Sunday around 10:30 p.m. that the woman’s dog was first found by local residents.

Search and rescue teams then located the woman down a steep, brushy hillside off a roadway and were working to help her out of the area, the sheriff’s office said.
