The Powerball jackpot has surged to an estimated $750 million, making it the 10th largest jackpot in the game's history. The next drawing is scheduled for Monday night, marking the 37th consecutive drawing without a jackpot winner since May 31. The cash option for the jackpot is approximately $338.6 million.
The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot stand at 1 in 292.2 million. "The excitement of playing for a colossal Powerball jackpot is back!" said Matt Strawn, chair of the Powerball Product Group and chief executive of the Iowa Lottery. He emphasized that purchasing a $2 ticket could lead to a life-changing win, with a portion of ticket sales supporting local community programs.
In the most recent drawing, no one matched all six numbers. However, two tickets sold in New York and Maine matched five numbers, each winning $1 million. A third ticket sold in South Dakota also matched five numbers and opted for the Power Play option, doubling its prize to $2 million.
Winners of the jackpot can choose between an annuity option, which consists of one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year, or a lump sum payment of about $338.6 million.
The last Powerball jackpot winner was announced in June, when a ticket worth $204.5 million was sold at a 7-Eleven in Arleta, California. This year, two of the four jackpot winners have come from Southern California. In March, a ticket worth $515 million was purchased in Anaheim. Other winners included a $328.5 million ticket sold in Oregon in January and a $167.3 million ticket sold in Kentucky in April.
The largest Powerball jackpots were both won in California: a $2.04 billion jackpot in November 2022 and a $1.765 billion jackpot in October 2023. Powerball tickets are available in 45 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings occur every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday.
