A Washington woman now faces the consequences for spitting on former St. Louisan Edward Martin Jr.

Emily Gabriella Sommer, 32, pleaded guilty recently to three counts of assaulting a government official. Sentencing is set for Oct. 10, and she faces up to one year in prison on each count.

A former Missouri Republican Party chair and often-unsuccessful political candidate, Martin now is the justice department's U.S. Pardon Attorney .

The charges harken back to May 8, when Sommer — in an act captured by a television film crew — appears to spit on Martin while he was being interviewed outside of the U.S. Attorney’s office.

After her initial arrest, Sommer was released on the condition that she not contact Martin.
